In the September 2025 edition of ‘Mann ki
                             Baat,’ Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi
                             spoke about the untimely demise of celebrated
                             artist Zubeen Garg. He remembered the
                             musical genius as a singer deeply connected
                             with Assamese culture. The Prime Minister said
                             that  Zubeen  Garg  would  always  remain  in
                             our memories and his music will continue to
                             inspire generations. His words touched every
                             Assamese heart and conveyed the depth of
                             Zubeen’s contribution, not just to Assam, but
                             to the cultural landscape of the entire nation.
                             Through his voice, Assam found a place in the
                             heart of India, reminding us that art knows no
                             boundaries of region or language.
                                 The news of Zubeen Garg’s untimely passing
                             brought profound sorrow across Assam. People
                             in India and abroad mourned the passing of
                             a man who was much more than a musician.
       Dr. Himanta Biswa     Zubeen was a singer, actor, composer, director
             Sarma           and above all, a cultural icon. His sudden death
        Chief Minister, Assam  ended a colourful journey spanning over three
                             decades.
                                 Born on November 18, 1972 in Tura,
                             Meghalaya, Zubeen inherited music from his
        A LEGEND             family and learnt classical music from his
                             mother. Gifted and versatile, he mastered many
        DEPARTS              instruments and absorbed folk traditions. His
                             debut  album  Anamika,  released  in  1992,  gave
                             Assamese music a new direction by blending
        Assam Bids           folk and modern rhythms that instantly
                             connected with the youth. His voice crossed
                             linguistic boundaries. Over time, he sang more
        Farewell to          than  38,000  songs  in  40  languages  including
                             Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, Bodo, Mising, Karbi,
        Zubeen Garg          Garo, Dimasa, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada,
                             and Malayalam. In Assam, his repertoire
                             extended from Bihu songs to Tokari geet, from
                             Borgeet to romantic numbers. Every song
                             carried his unique style.
                                 Zubeen Garg was an institution unto himself.
                             He  directed  films,  wrote  lyrics,  composed
                             music  and  acted  in  popular  Assamese  films
                             such as Dinabandhu, Mon Jai, Mission China,
                             Kanchanjangha and Doctor Bezbaruah 2, etc.
                             His songs in Hindi films like ‘Dil Se’ and ‘Gangster’
                             made him a household name across India, while
                             ‘Ya Ali’ brought him national fame and awards.
