India's Intangible Heritage
Chhath Puja to gain Global Recognition
India is a country where energy of life flows through every festival,
every custom and every tradition. These traditions are truly the soul
of our culture, connecting us for generations. These living heritage
sites are now also making their way onto the global stage. Prime
Minister Narendra Modi recently stated in ‘Mann ki Baat’ that the Indian
government is working to have Chhath Puja included in UNESCO's
Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Chhath Puja is not only a festival of Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern
Uttar Pradesh, but is now celebrated throughout India and among
Indians worldwide. This festival is dedicated to the Sun God, in which
offerings are made to the setting and rising sun. It is a wonderful
confluence of nature, faith and human compassion.
