and fear. Surrendered Maoists,
often confined to special
camps, found a rare chance to
reintegrate into society through
this event. Victims of violence,
too, saw the games as a
moment to reclaim their agency
and contribute to the spirit of
collective progress.
The Bastar Olympics stood
out as a symbol of empowerment
for communities traditionally
marginalised by conflict, poverty,
and neglect. Participants from
remote villages, often devoid of
infrastructure and opportunities,
were given a stage to showcase
their talents and rediscover their
potential.
For many, this was their
first chance to compete, excel,
and be celebrated. The timing
of the Olympics was deliberate,
coinciding with a period when
Maoist groups traditionally
attempt to recruit or coerce
youngsters into their fold. By
involving youth in sports, the
initiative provided a constructive
alternative, reinforcing the
government’s efforts to build
trust and promote development
in the region.
Moreover, the games
highlighted the government’s
commitment to restoring
normalcy in Bastar. Schools
