of S. L. Bhyrappa
In a quiet village in Karnataka’s Hassan district, a child named
Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa was born on 20 August 1931. No
one knew then that he would become one of India’s most thoughtful
and widely read writers. His life was marked by hardship, courage, and
an unending search for truth. He wrote stories that explored questions
about life, society, and the human spirit. Over time, he became a
voice that reflected both the pain and the strength of India’s cultural
and moral world. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi expressed his
condolences on his passing, calling him a towering stalwart who
stirred the nation’s conscience and touched the very soul of India.
Early Life
Bhyrappa’s childhood was filled with struggle. He was born into a
poor family and lost his mother and brother to plague when he was
